Eileen Neff - Still Life

Okay, okay, so we have not posted in a while but with many exciting events coming up for Silicon and our artists it's time to get back on it. So, armed with a fancy new phone (well not that new) I am off and blogging.

First Fridays in Philadelphia we normally stay open a little late but with the our serious space constraints the gallery has taken a back seat to the printmaking studio. This First Friday we will be venturing out to three important galleries (to us anyway).

Eileen Neff has, what promises to be, an amazing show at Bridgette Mayer Gallery on Walnut Street, we printed and mounted a bunch of works for the show and they are stunningly beautiful. Can't wait to see it in a gallery setting.

Second on the list is "Fresh Impression" at the Projects Gallery in Northern Liberties, a show in partnership with the Brandywine Workshop

I was honored to be a juror for the show along with Raphael Damast, Exhibitions Director, Taller Puertorriqueño; Shelley Langdale, Associate Curator of Prints, Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Elizabeth F. Spungen, Executive Director, The Print Center. The show is intended to extend the impact of Full Spectrum at the Philadelphia Museum of Art of selected works from Brandywine. It's a great show and well worth a visit to the Museum.

Finally on our list is Gravy Studio where one of our friends and customers Mark Havens is showing Monster Factory  a series of works uniquely printed on gold anodized aluminum sheets, very cool and apparently indestructible! One of Gravy's directors is our own Katie Tackman.

A little off-topic but a work of art nevertheless, meet our (Sabrina and Rick's) daughter Violet.

More Mac fun How to Smoke a Drive!

We have an old Mac running OS9.0 mainly because we have a very expensive scanner and Apple decided at some point in the past to not support SCSI (despite them being SCSI evangelists).

So after the the iMac crashed and could not be revived (a big shout of thanks to Diskwarrior which managed to recover practically all of the files) I thought it would be prudent to back up the OS 9.0 Mac. I plugged in my trendy Firewire external hard drive and, yes you guessed it, the older OS smoked the drive. (once again a big thanks to Disk Warrior for a pretty much complete recovery of data).

What have we learned from this? Apple upgrades their hardware and OS without ANY regard to previous models. I guess the reason they do this is because they can, unlike Microsoft, who just make the software and their hardware vendors drive them to support practically everything from he past.

The New York Time and the Armory Show

If you go to The Amory show in New York and happen on Philadelphia's Cereal Art booth you will find a great print by Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev based on an original work - not quite as archival as our print - it's made of cereal, yes, breakfast cereal. The work is of Obama and already had some sales even before the opening, a good cue for the art economy we hope.

Streamlined Irons - Inquirer Article

Streamlined Irons opens tonight - March 6th (First Friday) at Silicon Gallery with images from the book by Jay Raymond with photographs by James B Abbott and Jay Texter. There is a great article in the Philadelphia Inquirer http://www.philly.com/inquirer/magazine/40833832.html. The show is awesome, a couple of the larger prints show how big you can go starting with a relatively small digital images a tribute to the photographers. Continues to March 28th with a closing reception on the 26th from 6 - 8 pm.

The Dufala Brothers at Fleisher/Ollman

You can't miss this amazing show from the talented Dufala Brothers, a combination of witty sculpture, paintings and, of course, a fabulous digital print.
